Survivor’s Poem for Children

To all the children who’ve grown up
In a domestic violence home
Believe me child you are not alone
There are many out there just like you
You are probably getting abused too
None of this is right
You shouldn’t have to grow up in a household
Where people curse and fight
You’re scared for your life and I know it
Everyday you hope things go well and nothing blows it
To get him mad
When it’s time to go to school
You’re excited, you’re glad
However when it’s time to go home you’re hesitant, you’re sad
At school you feel cared for
There’s no cursing, no fighting, no violence, no breaking of glass
You wish you could stay at school and live in your class
Because you know when you go home
Someone will have to feel it
The control, the pressure to be perfect, the hate
and the bruises
Believe me child I know of your pain
But you are not at all to blame
I know how you feel
But please don’t keep it quiet
Like it’s no big deal
Tell a grown up, a teacher, a friend
It’s only when you speak up
Will the pain ever end!
